I love Jodi Picoult as an author but this book was only okay. It's a hard read. There were so many stereotypes and I just didn't love it. I didn't like the language used --- it made it sound like it was set in the 1930s but mentioned up to date issues. ...more

Heavy hitting Picoult book where she takes a look at racism in America. Ruth has always done everything "right", she studies, she went to college, she got married, had a son, had a wonderful career. This is one of Jodi Picoult's best books except for one thing: the ending ties up everything in a neat package which doesn't fit with the realism that precedes it.
Picoult succeeds in bringing all sides of a hot button issue to her readers. In this case, it is racism. Her novels brings validation to African Americans and a soul-searching teaching tool to whites. This book provides interesting discussions for a book club.
