Excellent, multi-layered mystery. Love the characters - Benni, Gabe, Elvia, Dove, et al. Also offers a fascinating view of an area of California you don't see on tv - the small towns and ranches beyond LA, Hollywood and San Francisco. Lots of suspects and some unexpected twists so you're not sure how the pieces will fit together. Author stays true to the characters and doesn't disappoint, there are no tired cliches. Resolution is believable and satisfying. First in a series that makes you want t

Benni Harpers husband died in a car accident nine months ago. She has left the ranch where they lived and started a job running the local craft museum and artists coop. Benni finds one of the coop's potters murdered in the studio and becomes enmeshed in the investigation. The author did a realistic job of describing the grieving process Benni would be going through. The ending was too rushed for me though I will read more in the series. ...more

This is the first in a new series I'm trying and it has an interesting main character. She's a sassy cowgirl on the Central California coast who's lost her husband and is trying to start a new life. She's engaging and funny but also vulnerable as she deals with being a widow, leaving the ranch and starting a new job, and meeting a new guy in town. She's introspective and also headstrong. She runs a museum and artists' co-op and dabbles in a little mystery solving. It's a cozy mystery with heart

I read this for my mystery club's "Arts & Crafts" theme. It was okay. Several members really like Ms. Fowler's quilt series so I might give more of these a try sometime.
