I had no idea what to expect when I picked up this book.... I usually have an aversion to anything religious... as the title seemed to promise...but it is on the 1001 Books You Must Read List and fit tone of the task of one of my book club challenges. This is a book I re-read-the first time being a high school assignment. I was hoping to get more out of it the second time around but I didn't. The dialogue was just so hard for me to follow. While I understand it was done that way to be more realistic and in character, I just found myself having to re-read the words just to figure out what was being said. Once I switched from reading to listening to the book, I enjoyed it more. At first, I did like the book, I couldn't read it, I tried many times over the years. But then I got it on audible, which helped me get through the book. But Janie did a lot of whiny (may have been the narrator) and depending on her husbands. She didn't speak her mind, until she was with Tea Cake, and that's when she was the whinest, and can't live without him.
