What an incredibly beautiful book! There is no way to describe the love, understanding and compassion showing through every page.
The story of Janie’s life is that of a black woman seen entirely through a black woman’s eyes. Her voice is articulate, her life has quite a few bumps, but from every page the vibrancy, the struggle to be who she is speaks from the pages. Really worth the read.

4 stars. That was intense and heavy but also beautiful and hopeful. I loved the writing. This was my first book by Ms. Hurston (shame on me, I know) but it definitely won’t be the last. Her writing and story telling are fantastic and gripping. Janie’s story is very interesting and difficult at times but it’s told so well. It covers a lot of important topics, particularly gender roles and Ms. Hurston handles the topics with care. This is considered a classic for a reason and I can see why now.

Born a slave, her grandmother wants better for Janie. The safety of a prosperous marriage is what she secures for her. But there is no happiness there for her. Neither in her second marriage, though outwardly even more of a success than the first one. Only much later in life does she find the person that matches the yearning of her soul.
This one spoke to my heart.
