I can't believe this little gem was never taught in my high school or college years! Perhaps, I'd not have enjoyed or understood it. Janie is a wonderful and wondrous character. Her story is told through her POV mostly and her voice is strong, except when she needed her voice. Then, it was silent.

That worried me and surprised me, for Janie is a strong woman. Lord, she had to be. She survived three men, a hurricane, a mad dog, and people's wagging tongues.

I loved this book. It's such a well written romance about a woman who lives her life as she wishes. Married three times, the last one is the love of her life. This story is not at all empowering. Rather than seeing the protagonist as a powerful figure finding her way in the world, I saw her as a victim of her surroundings, attaching herself to the closest man and then suffering the consequences.

One of the most sexiest, romantic phrases written in a book. It made me want to pine for love again. Have that feeling when I first met my husband. I understood all of the colorful characters. Most of all Janie I understood the most. BTW. Janie is my paternal grandma’s name.
