The story opens with a long line of people stand outside a job fair at dawn. Suddenly, someone shows up in a Mercedes and drives straight into the crowd, killing eight. From that dramatic start, we cut to the living room of retired cop Bill Hodges as he suffers from depression, passing his day watching daytime TV, while popping his father's gun in his mouth and contemplating suicide.

I like thrillers, but to really enjoy them I have to A) like the people in them, and B) believe what's going on. Unfortunately, this book didn't make me like the (highly egotistical and massively irresponsible) 'hero' Bill Hodges. It also really didn't make me believe in the plot.

Of course it gets five stars, it's Stephen King.
