Yeah, as always, I’m the last one to the party. ‘Better late than never’ is a poor, overused excuse I give myself, but that is what it is.
The measure of my excitement with this book was outstandingly momentous. A Game of Thrones, Book 1 of A Song of Ice and Fire series is an amalgam of many things. Many great things, to be precise. GRRM is believed to be the lord of fantasy-lore, and this book lives to it's creator's name.

Re-reading this book has confirmed for me why I love this series and the TV show so much. The world is well-developed and has so much depth, and urgh it's just so great. So we have a lot going on in this first book. The Hand of the King, Jon Arryn has died, and as King Robert Baratheon has been good friends with Warden in the North, Eddard Stark, for years, he rides North to offer the position to Ned. And things get complicated from there. We have murder conspiracies, w ...more

I've thought over and over it and come to the conclusion that I think people are nuts when it comes to this book. Martin spends way too much time describing things I feel are irrelevant to the story. It's true that he is gifted in keeping you interested in a wide array of characters, which is a rare talent. But the descriptions of scenery and the drawn out plot often made me bored.
