What Members Thought

The world is dying. A father and son are on a road traveling with a few other survivors. The sky spits grey snow. No animals have survived. The travelers have turned to cannibalism to survive. The boy’s mother has left; she suicides rather than going South with her husband and young son who is sick and hungry. McCarthy never tells the reader, whether Nature or Man has caused the world to die, he constructs a profound love story that is deeper than any other; the love of a parent for his child.

This is a dark and chilling novel which has a tension about it which means you just keep turning the pages. It is written in a very spare style with little punctuation. The sparseness of the writing matches the devastating bareness of the post-apocalyptic landscape which the man and the boy and walking through. You find yourself asking where they are going? They seem to have no end-goal - the only goal is to keep walking. It is a terrifying vision of a future where almost all humanity is gone, a

I thought how boring could it be, when I first read the description, it's only about a man and his son trudging along 'The Road' post-apocalyptic... Err, nothing really happens and there ain't really anybody else. But how did such a book get such a fantastic reception from the world?

It's clear I'm in a tiny minority here, but I really didn't like this book at all. I gave it 2 stars rather than just one because, once in a while, there were moments. But not enough of them, so the best I can say for the book was that it was a quick read. There were many intense or disturbing incideents, and several uplifting ones. But in my opinion, it didn't all fit into a meaningful whole.

I have had this book on my TBR list since 2012 and finally decided to give it a shot. I liked it just okay. I kept waiting for something major to happen. It was never anything major just a few small things. Even still though I gave it 3 stars cause it made what seems unimaginable into a world of believable. It would have gotten more stars had a major thing happened and/or it ended better. I was very disappointed with the ending.

This novel completely surprised me. I did not know the background of the story prior to starting to read it. From the beginning the story captivated me and I was intrigued to see what would actually happen through out the story and how it would end.
One of my favourite aspects of the story was the lack of a timeline. There was no passing of seasons just day and night. It didn’t matter how long they had been walking just that they got up each day to do it.
