Mr. Churchill's Secretary by Susan Elia MacNeal is the first book in the Maggie Hope Mystery series. Maggie Hope, a brilliant mathematician, obtains a posting as Mr. Churchill's secretary, and becomes involved in an IRA/Nazi plot to destroy England. An interesting novel although not really much of a mystery, but rather poor espionage. I found the story rather farfetched and difficult to get into. I quite liked the story & mystery, but have some reservations about true events that were mentioned being out of chronological order. I also don't think homosexuality was as openly accepted in either country as was indicated in the book. In fact I'm sure there were laws in place that kept it hidden in society until fairly recently. British citizen Maggie Hope was raised in America, but when circumstances force her to return to England on the eve of World War II, she finds herself unable to leave until she can find someone to buy her grandmother's old Victorian house. She was taken to America as a baby by her Aunt Edith following the death of her parents in a car crash. Back in Boston, her aunt pleads with her to return and pursue her doctorate in mathematics at MIT. Instead, Maggie is persuaded to take a job as a secretary ...more

Loved it! Well written, interesting, and hits nearly all my favorites: historical, mathematics, cryptography, and even has ballet (Saddler's Wells) in it. Going out and buying the next one in the series as soon as I can.
And in my view, way better than Maisie Dobbs series, more on the level of Nicola Upson and Suzanne Arruda's mysteries.

It started out okay and then got progressively more ridiculous, but okay - I'm in a generous mood and I'll give Maggie Hope the MI 5 agent a try. I didn't like her in this one and saw no evidence of her greatness. ...more
