This could have been a 5 star read for me but it was a bit gruesome and I struggled with the chapters from the serial killer's point of view. I've never been a fan of being in the killer's mind. I usually shy away from books that include this POV but I really loved Jack and the other supporting characters. The writing was well done, the plot kept my interest and even had my heart pounding a few times. Looks like I will be continuing the series.

Whiskey Sour by J.A. Konrath is the first book in the Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels Mystery series. A serial killer calling himself "The Gingerbread Man" is torturing and mutilating his victims before leaving then in dumpsters. No issues with Jack or any of her cop colleagues, but I'm not sure I ever cared for serial killer manifestos, and I certainly don't now.
Doesn't help that I read the book on Halloween. I might continue but I know it has a bunch of serial killer plots in the next few books at least so maybe not. ...more
