This could have been a 5 star read for me but it was a bit gruesome and I struggled with the chapters from the serial killer's point of view. I've never been a fan of being in the killer's mind. I usually shy away from books that include this POV but I really loved Jack and the other supporting characters. The writing was well done, the plot kept my interest and even had my heart pounding a few times. Looks like I will be continuing the series. ...more

Whiskey Sour by J.A. Konrath is the first book in the Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels Mystery series. A serial killer calling himself "The Gingerbread Man" is torturing and mutilating his victims before leaving then in dumpsters. I enjoyed this book a lot more than I thought I would and it was not what I expected. No issues with Jack or any of her cop colleagues, but I'm not sure I ever cared for serial killer manifestos, and I certainly don't now.

Doesn't help that I read the book on Halloween. I might continue but I know it has a bunch of serial killer plots in the next few books at least so maybe not.
