Dragonsong (Harper Hall, Bk 1) by Anne McCaffrey has been my go to dragon favorite since I was 12 years old (I am 50). AND it's about a young girl! Really, it's THE classic must read.
My son & I have a mild hate relationship with Eragon; he refused all dragon fantasy for the rest of his childhood. Not very inspiring.

I listened to this on audio and gave it more than a fair chance. The premise was good a book about someone who likes books. But this book just fell flat. I was bored and although this book takes place in Iowa in the western and central part of the midwest, the voices given to the townspeople have more of a southern drawl or twang. Being from the midwest myself, this was particularly irritating. If the town was south of the Mason-Dixon line, a southern accent could be believable, but up in Iowa,
