Set in NYC in 1933, this book reminds me of the Sam Spade and Mickey Spillane books. Lots of dames, speakeasies, fistfights, men with questionable backgrounds and more of the classic noir elements. Once I got into the story, I had a hard time putting the book down, although the namedropping -- Cole Porter, Joe Kennedy, Babe Ruth, to name a few -- made the believability issue a little harder to accept. This is my first Michael Murphy book, and I'm a little torn about my reaction to this book, hence the 3-star rating. It's definitely outside my usual genre, but it was interesting. I liked the setting of 1930's NYC, where women were "dolls" and "dames," and men always wore suits and ties, even when battling crime. Ok first, there are some pretty cheesy parts to the story. However, I still really enjoyed it. I loved the time period, I loved the characters. Great book.
