So disappointing. It's predictable chick lit (not that I despise chick lit, I enjoy a lot of it but not this one)- way too many personal tragedies per capita in a charming small town, yet tiny cast of characters contains soul mates for important characters. There's a child who acts like no child in her situation could possibly act, unrealistic dialogue, tough characters with hearts of gold, etc. I think it must be that those of us who love books are so starved for books about books that people w

I'm a sucker for books about books, or bookstores, or bookstore owners, so I was looking forward to this one; unfortunately it let me down a bit. It wasn't bad by any means, in fact it was a very cute little book, but there's nothing memorable about it. Fikry doesn't become interesting until about halfway through the book, which doesn't leave much time for the reader to really connect given how short the novel is.

Adored this story of a cantankerous bookseller who opens his heart to an abandoned child. This is a book lovers book set in an island community. The challenges the characters face are mentioned but are mostly 'off screen' because the author skips ahead in the next chapter. The disconnected pieces and lives all connect in some way in later chapters. It's a satisfying read.

I would say that I read a lot, more than the average person. I read books like a starving person at a buffet, one after the other.
So it was really surprising to me that after I finished this book, I actually had to close my kindle and reflect on this novel, I wasn't able to just pick up another book and start a new adventure.

Unfortunately, A. J. Fikry’s lonely life is not at all what he expected. His wife died, his bookstore is lacking income -moving towards bankruptcy, and sadly, his precious, rare collection of Poe's poetry, Tamerlane (worth $400,000) was stolen (it was what he valued greatly.) Slowly, he isolated himself from others living on Alice Island, despite visits from a kind, police officer; his sister-in-law, Ismay; and Amelia Loman, the eccentric sales rep who pushes merchandise. A.J. has given up on pe

4.5 Stars. A wonderful story full of literary references and tidbits. The characters were varied and interesting and I found myself loving certain characters and hating others for obvious and valid reasons. I will definitely recommend this and I'm so glad I read it!
