Picking things from the very grass root level, this book “The Time Keeper” tells you a story about time. The founders of time, the birth of time, all about time. And about how once it laid its hold on mankind, everything changed.
To judge this book from my point of view would be different from many. Low acquaintance with subjects like philosophy, and no idea what-so-ever on the myths about time (Yes, no idea about the Tower of Babel even, sorry) are some predominant factor 3.5 compelling stars.

To judge this book from my point of view would be different from many. Low acquaintance with subjects like philosophy, and no idea what-so-ever on the myths about time (Yes, no idea about the Tower of Babel even, sorry) are some predominant factors.
So, with blind faith I surrendered and I found it a pretty good read. It’s more like those moral stories grandmoms and granddads often tell you before you doze off to sleep, as a kid. A lesson for the rest of your life.

Dor, also called Father Time, tries to find out a way to stop time to prevent his ailing wife from succumbing to death. He succeeds in reaching the Heavens, but is sent away to a solitary life of confinement and loneliness in a cave far away. He listens to the voices of people on earth, all praying, asking for more time or less. He doesn’t age a moment, but his world grew grim and lifeless. Until one day he is summoned to Earth, to redeem himself. To teach two people who were on on the edge of desperation, the value of time.

Often, when on the run, we complain incessantly against time. How it passes, and we never knew. How it never halted. How things would’ve been different, had we a little more time. Reflexly, I do too. I spend more than half my time thinking about the ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’ of a place where I could afford time. Inadvertently, the object which man invented for his use, becomes the tool of his own destruction. We measure time, we schedule events of the future, and we contemplate on the time that has passed. No doubt, we survive, safe and sound. What we don’t is live through it. Treasure. Create memories.
Dor’s story is a singular example of it all. The man who invented time had his say. He stopped his ageing, he won over time. Nevertheless, he lost everything dear to his heart, in the long way.

The story runs on parallel lines and shifts from one head to the other quite easily. The philosophical aspects have been well highlighted, and that is what made the storyline quite interesting. Even if its a fast read, I took breaks to let the words sink in. I’ve heard many criticize the emboldened sentences then and there. But they didn’t much alter the flow for me. One commendable thing were the punctuations. They kept me hooked till the next phase came in, gradually building in the intensity. Whenever I sat down to read this book, I finished a huge chunk of it, because of my curiosity being piqued up with every halt. And every halt with a preceding statement that meant, “Little do you know what’s about to happen”. (that’s my version, obviously :P)

As for the characters, they are flawed. However, just because they are flawed, I don’t hate them. Both Victor Delamonte and Sarah Lemon are construed in a way where they are meant to depict the wretchedness of each end, be it leading a billionaire’s life or a teenage girl’s. I didn’t like any of them personally, but I don’t think the author intended to make them likeable in particular. That apart, some might relate more to Victor, some to Sarah, hence the difference in opinion. I related partly to both, so wouldn’t judge one over the other. I didn’t like the ending much, appeared too clichéd for my liking.

Overall, a nice one-time read. Lots of stuff to ponder upon, reflect.

This was not one of my favorite book from Mitch Albom. It was ok but not worth a re-read.

The cover and title attracted me to this novel, along with the intriguing back-cover copy. However, it turned out to be a very strange story. The premise was interesting, but in the end, it wasn’t my sort of story. I’m sure some readers will love it as it’s complex and interesting and quirky.

Content: foreign gods, alcohol, teen drinking, expletives, profanity, suicide
