I fully expected to hate this book. I often find super-popular, over-hyped books disappointing, or even not worth finishing. Popular fiction and thrillers usually aren't my thing. But oh my gosh, there is nothing excessive about the hype for this book.
So it's a thriller, but smart too, something along the lines of In the Woods, but even more suspenseful and with less police procedural. It's all twists and turns and mind games, keeping me engaged but shedding light onto the human condition, which ...more

This book is really hard for me to rate in terms of just a 5 star scale. In terms of the crafting of a story that draws you in and makes you want to see where it goes: 5 out of 5 stars. I hated every character in this story and detested just about every action they took, and I still felt compelled to finish. That's a pretty big testament to the story Gillian Flynn has crafted here. Wow. Much different than what I was expecting. I was glued to this book, couldn't put it down. It was twisty without being one of those plot twists you see coming a mile away.

I can't quite place my finger on why I didn't like this book more; maybe it was because so many others talked it up so much that it simply didn't live up to my expectations. The middle was okay, but I barely made it through the first half and found myself wishing it was over about 50 pages before it actually was.

I don't even know what to say here. This was my second Gillian Flynn book. She seems to have a talent for making all of her characters unlikeable.
This book...in a word: MINDFUCK
