I was sorely disappointed with this monstrosity. I enjoyed the setup in the first 150-200 pages when Wolgast is rounding up death row inmates for some kind of government testing but them they grab a 6 year old girl. WTF? This part was at least engaging. Then we get the vampire apocalypse and jump 92 years into the future.

This started off well, but after the first third, I had trouble following the characters. It was very hard to read more than 30 pages at a time (lots of details and changes) and too thick to read in bed (which is my preferred reading place). Since it's due back at the library, I'm going to quit for now.

I just could not get into this book. I tried. I really did but it just wasn't happening for me. The author kept throwing a crap ton of characters at you all at once. Some are important and some aren't. Then after only a few scenes you are supposed to remember these specific characters several hundred pages later. Needless to say I had a difficult time remembering who was whom.

A truly engaging read except for the beginning where I felt like it's taken so very long to set up and there were just too many characters to keep track of.
However, once background has been set and we moved onward by approx 90 year, it was much improved. The world as we know it no longer exists: a research gone wrong has infected most humankind to something otherworldy and not many has survived. Hope is something elusive & illusionary, it is a thin sliver of light which they espied but not many ...more

So many people started reading this book I had to jump on the bandwagon and read it too. The premise seemed interesting and I was definitely in the mood for a more chunky tome. I honestly wasn't expecting to enjoy this book much, considering the subject matter, and yet found myself unable to put it down.

It's great to come across a well written book, they seem few and far between. I was really impressed with the way Justin wrote the book. The way he used diaries and official documents to move the story forward really added to the experience of reading.
My only complaint is that there were way too many characters to remember.
I think that EVERYONE should read this book. I have been recommending The Passage from the third chapter and I will continue to keep telling everybody to read it. ...more
