The characters in this book are trying to figure out who they are and the path they want their lives to follow. Tugging them one way is the reputation they have in their small, gossipy, Southern town. Tugging them in other ways are the secrets harbored by themselves and other characters they must face.

Every time I pick up a book by Sarah Addison Allen, I love her more and more. The two main characters, Willa Jackson and Paxton Osgood, are linked together not just through the same time and place, but through their grandmothers from several generations ago. I really liked these two characters, both strong southern women, but I loved Nana Osgood. She is just what a woman would want for a grandmother. This book in some ways does not seem to know what it wants to be, a bit romance, a bit mystery, a bit contemporary, a bit 'chick lit'*, a bit coming of age, a bit historical fiction, and a tiny titch Stephen King. At the same time, the author Sarah Addison Allen somehow brings it all together in a coherent, enjoyable read. A quick chick lit read that didn't quite pull me in as much as the Waverly stories do (I liked the cameo appearance by the Waverly caterers!). The story was about finding yourself and just being happy with who you are and ignoring what society expects of you. The whole peach keeper/skeleton-in-the-closet subplot felt unnecessary and distracting-but without it, there would have been no odd magical element insinuating itself into the story that makes Allen's books so enjoyable. ...more
