The characters in this book are trying to figure out who they are and the path they want their lives to follow. Tugging them one way is the reputation they have in their small, gossipy, Southern town. Tugging them in other ways are the secrets harbored by themselves and other characters they must face.

Every time I pick up a book by Sarah Addison Allen, I love her more and more. The two main characters, Willa Jackson and Paxton Osgood, are linked together not just through the same time and place, but through their grandmothers from several generations ago. I really liked these two characters, both strong southern women, but I loved Nana Osgood. She is just what a woman would want for a grandmother. This covers friendship from many viewpoints, across gender, age and income levels. Issues of power, control, bias, independence, tradition and perceptions/assumptions are all touched on. Willa, Paxton, Colin, and Sebastian must deal with all of these during the story. But also the friendship of the two grandmothers and their story once revealed put lots of things in perspective. Good story but very low key. Just needed a bit more dynamics.
