This story focuses on Willa Jackson, who is descended from a family that was once prominent in the town of Walls of Water; and Paxton Osgood, who is descended from the family that took over the former home of the Jackson family. Willa and Paxton aren't friends, but their grandmothers were best friends when they were younger and still are to this day.
