This is a tough book to rate. Giving it a three didn't feel right, so I bumped it to a four.

It is dark, very dark, but the emotions portrayed are raw and felt real. I'm not sure what I was expecting when I picked this up, but I know it wasn't this. I was unaware until after I finished the story that the author is a death penalty investigator, which is probably why I felt that the emotions were true. She must have a wealth of information available and I would imagine writing this was probably so

Words I would use to describe this book: unique. raw. insightful. real. wow!

So this little gem is unlike anything I have read before. Honestly I am having a difficult time putting my thoughts into words. I wouldn't call this book an action-packed page turner. The author's writing style is deceivingly good, they use a simple structure with eloquent turns of phrase that have a powerful impact. The book had some uncomfortable passages, the violence (off-screen) was intense and the fall out was harsh. But I found the characters fascinating and the way the author brought out the beauty in ugly things was poignant and very well done.

This book is set on death row. Arden is the main narrator, he is a man waiting on death row, he doesn't speak. He reads a lot and he tells the stories of the Lady, who helps some prisoners get off death row. York who chose to go to death instead of continuing to file appeals. He also tells the story of a few other prisoners.

There was definitely some cringe inducing stories told, it turned out to be a really great book.

I'm changing my rating from two stars to three because this book left an impression on me. Two days after finishing it, I'm enjoying the memory of it more than I enjoyed reading it (or, more accurately, listening to it). It also deserves a bump for an unexpected bit at the end and satisfying wrap-up of storylines. ...more
