I am still numb from the surprise of not liking this book.
The overarching theme of loss of imagination due to adulthood is so terrifyingly on-the-nose. There is neither subtlety nor beauty in those passages. It just points a finger and says " you, you, you are an adult, do not let this happen". I can accept things are dire, I refuse to be preached it.

Eine Beerdigung führt ihn zurück in das Dorf seiner Kindheit. Einem Instinkt folgend geht er zu dem kleinen Ententeich, von dem Lettie immer behauptete er sei ein Ozean. I couldn't put this book down. There's something wonderful and terrifying about the world you get to glimpse. I'm still sorting through how I feel about the conclusion. I devoured this book and am sad it's over. What a lovely and fantastical journey.

There are a few scenes where adult inferences are needed, but other than that it could definitely qualify perhaps for young adults. As a child, I never cared for these types of books, but I found this one to be interesting. Perhaps, because it read more like a novella ...more

4 stars. My first Neil Gaiman book and I really, really enjoyed it. I had no idea what I was getting into when I picked it up but I'm so glad I took a chance on it. Such a breath of fresh air.
The story is hard to explain but while reading it I was hooked. The writing is fantastic and I really liked our main protagonist and the way the story was told.
