Well I never imagined that I would'nt love this book. I'm a huge Neil Gaiman fan! I loved Neverwhere, The Graveyard Book, and American Gods.
But somehow, this book just didn't give me the same 'joy in the fantastical' that I usually get reading his stories. The human thread in this story was darker and sadder, the characters less likeable. The story was too hauntingly nostalgic for me - I couldn't shake the lingering uneasiness and confusion with the disconnected/weird happenings throughout it a ...more

The Ocean at the End of the Lane is the first book by Neil Gaiman and I am pretty sure it will be my last. I felt the narration was flat; I didn't really connect with any of the characters; it was more of a novella than a novel. I tried explaining the plot to my adult son and daughter and I ended up with more questions than answers. I know that many people loved this book, but for me, I'm moving on.

A Very Different Kind Of Magic.
This is the kind of book that you discover by accident. You look at the cover, at the title, you pick it up, you read a bit. You put it down. There is something about it that sticks. So you get a copy. Then you read it, enjoying every page.
That is how I found this book. Very enjoyable. Very entertaining. A delightful read. A story that has you asking, where is this going? Where is the writer taking me. Not where I expected but I was glad of the destination.

I really don't know what I just read here-completely not what I expected. It turned into a horror-fantasy that had the most scary images and scenes but yet I kept reading because I needed to know. And for pulling me in despite the scares, this gets 3 stars.
