In 1923 John Adams came to America and used his background in winemaking to establish himself in Naples, NY. He became a citizen in 1929 and then went back to Germany for a visit to his terminally ill mother. While there he meets a girl and asks her to marry him. It is too big of a change for her and he goes home. They correspond and in 1932 he goes back for the wedding. They have 2 children in America, Peter and Marlies, but Elizabeth is very homesick.
