Alice Steinbach was a reporter for the Baltimore Sun in 1993 when she decided to take some time off and see if she could find her true self, undefined by labels. This was at age 59, the year after both of her sons had moved away from home. To do this she needed to travel to places where she was not known and do things that inspired her at the moment. Steinbach describes her experiences during a year off from work, spending time in Paris, London, Oxford, and Italy. What keeps this book from being just a travelogue is her goal -- her challenge to "find" herself, free from the routines of daily life that tend to define us all. While her descriptions of the places she visited are fine, it's her thoughts about being independent and about relationships with other people that I enjoyed.
