Finally, a ya book that doesn't annoy me. I liked the writing style. I liked the characters. It moved at a clip and kept me interested from beginning to end. I also liked the different perspectives. Nelly was a hoot. Really good debut. I'll read more by her. ...more

Marnie, 15 and Nelly, 12, need to survive a year on their own without anyone knowing their parents are dead. Then Marnie will be legally old enough to be responsible for them. I loved this book. Couldn't put it down! I love how the author would tell each scene from different points of view of the three main characters. It gives you an insight into the emotions they're going through. ...more

Whilst I enjoyed the gritty narrative of this book the writing style got a bit sloppy in the final third. There were a few typos, wrong names etc that were a bit irritating. I usually like the use of multiple narators and I did enjoy it in this book but there were times when it slowed the pace of the novel by recounting the same events in three difference voices.

I don't know if you can really 'enjoy' a book that is so dark but I definitely found it interesting and it was a good quick read.
