This is Wiesel’s memoir of his (and his family’s) time spent in Auschwitz. For such a slim volume it packs an emotional wallop. The writing is raw and graphic in places, tender and poetic in others.
The central questions Wiesel leaves in the reader’s mind are: Where is God in such horrible eras of history? How far will one descend when faced with terror and deprivation on a daily basis? How can someone truly recover from such an experience?

There is no doubt that this little book is incredibly powerful and the story told in it is harrowing and tragic in the extreme. It is hard to say that one 'enjoys' this book - but it tells and important story of the Holocaust. It sounds absolutely awful, but I think perhaps the book might have had more impact when it was first published in 1958. Since then, there have been so many books, films, documentaries, novels, essays, plays and stories dealing with the Holocaust that one almost feels that

This is the truly tragic story of a 15 year old boys time spent in a concentration camp and the death of his entire family... What makes this book even more tragic? It is all true. The book might only be 109 pages long, but each page reveals a new level of horror. One can not possibly imagine the horrors that this boy had to go through. It is eye-opening, see how far humanity is willing to go to survive. It heart-breaking, each time you saw a boy abandon his father so that he might live while th

Powerful book. Wiesel tells the truth of his experience even when he is not portrayed in a favorable light.
3.5-4 stars. I expected more from all the hype about this book. I gave it 3 stars but only because I was disappointed and as a modern "classic," I feel like I'm supposed to give it at least 4 stars.

I started the audio last night and right at the beginning, I thought, I knew there was a reason why this book was on my TBR for so long and not being picked up. I shrink from any thought of the holocaust; from the thought of being persecuted (no, exterminated) for one's race & belief.
Not long though before I really admire his courage and strenght and at the end, his faith. What a truly remarkable man of God.

One of those intensely heavy books that I loved but don't think I could ever read again.
