The one thing I didn't like about having seen the movie before reading the book is that I already have a preconceived notions of how exactly things should be because I was told (shown) them.
Coraline is a wonderful story of love and bravery. I'm not a fan of horror stories but since it's children's horror story, I thought I should be able to handle it. I didn't do too badly but before recommending it to a child, I'd take into consideration their disposition to freaky things.

I'm in the minority here but I didn't like this book. Just like Coraline, I was bored. Though I didn't have a magic door to walk through for some excitement.
I really disliked Coraline's parents. They were so caught up in their own little worlds that they completely ignored Coraline. Coraline's very young and basically runs around without parental supervision. Yes I understand that's the moral of the story but still it irked me.

Although this book wasn't terrible, there is no doubt it is a children's story. I like Neil Gaiman's imagination, but I wasn't fully convinced by this fairy tale and I did't really warm to Coraline. I expect that when my children are a bit older they will love it, although even so, there are probably better chilllers out there for their age. I'm disappointed. I like Neil Gaiman a lot normally.

Brilliant! Neil Gaiman has the most amazing imagination, so it shouldn't be a surprise that he could come up with a creepy children's story that is totally original. Coraline is a bored little girl living in a new flat with her otherwise occupied parents and some very bizarre neighbors. When she discovers a door that leads to an alternate world almost identical to her own, but with parents who seem to want to lavish her with attention and feed her all kinds of delicious food - well, she just has

Good and not nearly as horrific as I feared.
2023 reread:
This time I was really creeped out and worried for Coraline. I guess expectations matter -- I remembered it wasn't as bad so I let my defenses down.
I really liked the final problem, with the tea party. I like how Coraline talks to herself for morale. I liked the tone in which the narration turns to the reader. ...more

3.75 stars. It was good, but not great. Creepy and odd. I did like the moral to the story.

This is a story of a little girl who des not get a lot of attention from her parents. When she is exploring their flat one day she finds a door and through this door is her 'other world' where she has other parents. Only her other mother is not good and kidnaps Coralines real parents. To save them Coraline must be very brave.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It moved very fast and I cant wait to read it to my daughters when they get a little older. ...more

I thought this book was very interesting & creative, but I also had a rough time getting around the fact that I was an adult reading a children's book (don't get me wrong - I love YA fiction, but for some reason, I struggled with this one - probably because it's meant for even younger readers?). It makes me wonder if I would have given it 5 stars when I was younger (although, it probably would have freaked me out too much to read it then). Perhaps if my son were old enough to read it with, I wou

What a very scary children's story. An excellent story as I expect from Neil Gaiman.
