Bill Bryson and his friend Stephen Katz are two regular out of shape middle-aged guys who decide to hike the Appalachian Trail. They take several months to do it, hiking a little ways at a time, but make it across about 1000 miles of the US from Georgia to Maine.

Bill Bryson offers a humorous account of his adventures walking the Appalachian Trail while describing the history of our national parks, strange habits of Americans in nature, and challenges we face in preserving wildlife while attempting to view it with or without the company of others. Although this was a satisfying read, he presented a sobering picture of the woods and their future.
