I went and saw The Golden Compass only because of the visceral review issued by the Vatican. I really enjoyed the movie but could tell that it was based on a book. So I bought the book.
I love this book! I read three quarters of it the night I got it.
I'm not normally a fan of this genre, I can't stand Harry Potter, and I've never gotten very far into The Hobbit; but Northern Lights has held my imagination the whole time.

This was an excellent book. The story was captivating, with so much going on. I have to continue the series. I wish I had started reading this year's ago when I just heard about it, but well worth the read!
