i knew i hadn't read this series, but i knew i'd read some philip pullman. (mystery solved: i read the sally lockhart books as a kid)
this is a breathless high adventure philosophical fantasy novel. a super fun ride. the characters are strong and really unique. i have to say that despite the ending, it felt really self-contained. i don't necessarily feel like i have to read the second book right this second or i'll die.

I think I'm neutral right now, but the ending did leave me with a need for more closure. I guess I have to read the second one, and probably the third one so I don't keep wondering what happened to the darn Polar Bears.

With all the hype, of course, both the movie and the book were nothing like I thought they would be. I did enjoy the imaginativeness of the writing and the story. There are a few things that I still don't quite understand, but perhaps they will be further explained in the other two books??? On to the next one...
