I thought the narrative choices detracted from the story as a whole. The first half of the book is told in three parts from the third-person perspectives of three women staying at Baikie's Cottage while they undertake an environmental impact study before a local quarry can be re-opened. The detective's perspective comes in during part two and seems off. There are references to earlier in the case, as if the inspector had been part of the narrative earlier.
