I'd never read anything by Louise Erdrich before. I wondered why she had chosen to tell the story of a woman's brutal rape, near-murder and its aftermath through the perspective of the woman's 13-year-old son. In the end notes, she says it was hard to write about this kind of crime which happens to (statistics say) at least 1 in 3 Native women without it becoming polemical. By writing about it the way she did, she allows one young man's pain and confusion to be a filter which can make the story ...more
