I love the narration of Simon Vance and found that my library had that audio version available, so I knew that was the way to go for this castaway story and listening certainly enhanced the book and kept it from bogging down in the slower parts. It's always interesting to read something written centuries ago, especially a foundational book for a genre.

By modern standards, this is really only worthy of being read by children/teens, though I think they'd get tired of the Christian theology. It's British Imperialist, in the worst sort of way - all good things come from the "civilized" world, and all people would jump at the chance of being slaves so that they could partake of Britain in some fashion. First of all, it was an interesting idea for a book. Stranded on tropical island with only what you can scavenge from his destroyed ship. The whole Anglo-Saxon spirit in Crusoe: the manly independence, the unconscious cruelty, the persistence, the slow yet efficient intelligence, the sexual apathy, the calculating taciturnity."
