This is sort of akin to taking the plot from one of Jane Austen's books (though none of the humor) and using that as an excuse to talk about social and labor issues during the industrial revolution. There IS a romance - a very leisurely one - but really, that romance seems more like an excuse to involve a neutral party who is neither factory owner nor factory worker, in order to have someone who can travel freely between both sides and get their points of view.

I thoroughly enjoyed this classic tale by Elizabeth Gaskell. An easy read about the class struggles in mid-nineteenth century England. It is easy to see that England had many of the same north/south issues as America in terms of class and the working struggles of the industrial age. I enjoyed the underlying story of the blooming relationship between Margaret and Mr. Thornton, giving the story and nice wrapped up ending.
