Set in the 1850s, Elizabeth Gaskell’s North and South is a Pride and Prejudice themed story of the industrial age of Victorian England. When Margaret Hale’s father loses his faith but not his principles, he resigns from his position as the church minister of a small country village in the south of England because he feels strongly that it’s wrong to simply go through the motions. Read for Victober 2017.

I loved this book because it was quiet and slow and completely enchanting. Mrs Gaskell told her stories with a graceful build of story told without huge plot points and without shocks and surprises. She told her stories with nuance and subtlety. I expected a romance and instead I got characters who are stubborn and silly and unique; characters who refuse to see that they are in a romance. Ms Hale and Mr Thornton were obviously going to end up together but neither knew it.

I feel like I am grading on a curve, rating this book 3 stars. Did I actually like it? Or do I like the idea of it? I usually adore 19th century British novels so started this novel with high hopes. I'd seen the BBC adaptation of Gaskell's Cranford and loved it as well, so felt sure I was in for a treat with North & South. Oh my, what happened?

I really enjoyed this book. It was the perfect Jane Austenesque book to fufill my classic lit craving. I loved the characters. The only thing I didn't like is that you can tell the book was written in magazine/newspaper article installments because there is not alot of "fluff". I like well written "fluff" when it contains beautiful descriptions of locations or character development. It just seemed at times that this book was jumping for action to action with not much explanation in between. But ...more
