I'm glad I changed my mind about reading this. Russian literature was not attractive to me, but I found myself really getting into the politics even more than the people. The story itself is rather like a soap opera, pleasant enough to keep you reading, but without much direction. I personally enjoyed the character of Levin the most. Tolstoy has taken two protagonists and created a story that makes their lives go in completely opposite directions. Elegant, self-possessed Anna throws away her suffocating marriage and beloved son for the love of another man, laying the path for her own destruction. Levin, on the other hand, broken-hearted, and self-doubting builds his life and wins back his love.

Feeling the need to redeem myself after so much tween fiction....
I LOVED Anna Karenina. Can't believe it took me 40 years to pick it up. It reads like a favorite novel but then there are so many levels to it and such spiritual themes. I'm sure I could read it another 10 times and walk away with more food for thought each time. All the details were so fascinating and provided a vivid glimpse into the Russian aristocracy, the role of women and peasants, and of course, love and betrayal in that tim ...more

One of the top novels ever written. I've read this book a few times and find Levin's story even more compelling than Anna's.
