The humour hits you on the first page. And you think "I’m going to enjoy this…". Beware though you do need to pay attention. The plot becomes increasingly complicated as it twists and turns and more and more characters come on board.
Dashiell Hammett deserves credit for writing the original hard boiled crime novel. One can imagine what a splash this novel must have made 90+ years ago.
