Warning: The introduction by Victoria Glendinning gives the ending away (she writes that she does not want to spoil it but then does, if you know anything about the Irish situation in the early 1920s when this book is set).
As ever, Bowen's prose is dense and beautiful. An entire society is on the brink of collapse and its inhabitants are only able to pretend that nothing is wrong. So much of the story is told through recurring objects that I think there is much to be gained from a re-read. But ...more
