What Members Thought

5 Stars
This is the type of five star where you wish you had another one to give. It haunts me. I'm not sure I have the right words, but maybe that is a good thing, for you don't want to know too much about this book before reading it. All you need to know is that you need to read it...
Thoughts on re-read:
Heart torn to pieces and tears rolling, I wonder again why I do this to myself. It sneaks up on you and it isn’t until the last pages you understand there is no way back. You have to finish it, ...more

I was resistant to reading this for the longest time.
I hadn't heard of the author before and neither the original cover with a large face and eyes or the blurb really says much about the book, and I ignored it. They both gave me a rather bland impression.

When Ishiguro is being clear, it's beautiful. Some of his other books are unnecessarily confusing but I think this one is perfect.

It’s not you, it’s me.
I should have read some reviews first as I’d have quickly seen that the story is mostly set in a sort of boarding school. Schools with their cliques and what not has never been anything I relate to or have any interest in (Jane Eyre was an exception because of the vivid specifics and I was already invested in the character). Anyway, I would continue and hope to eventually be interested, but so many many books are calling to me…

I just tried reading this book for the 3rd time and I still can't finish it. It's an uninspiring read at best. I won't try again.
