I was resistant to reading this for the longest time.

I hadn't heard of the author before and neither the original cover with a large face and eyes or the blurb really says much about the book, and I ignored it. They both gave me a rather bland impression.

Powerful. Heartbreaking. Thought-provoking. I read it as part of a book club and it generated a lot of discussion, both literary and social/political.
