Should be one star for how much I loathed Toad and his storyline but the beautifully descriptive sections about the bucolic English countryside push it up to a very weak two stars. I enjoyed reading about the other 3 animals. Why couldn't the fourth animal have been a shy squirrel or something, rather than a narcissistic Toad with sociopathic tendencies?

This was far and above anything I ever dreamed it would be. The writing was picturesque and hilarious at times. The characters were real to themselves. I somehow missed this as a child, I am so glad that I found it now. This is truly a great book.
