I think what makes this a remarkable story is that, in such a short and minimal space, Chopin is able to create a volume of inferences, assumptions and ideas about her lead character.

Sometimes we might have heard the old, familiar adage, “Don’t tell me. Show me.” I think Chopin does this in her brilliant short story “The Story of an Hour.” It is not always what we are told, but also what we are not told. And, not only that, what we can make assumptions and inferences about.

This very short story examines a woman’s reactions to the news that her husband has been killed in an accident. It is remarkable in the number of surprises it holds for the reader in just a few short pages!
