I saw this with my mother at the Stratford Featival (he Canadian one) about six or so years ago. I wanted to refresh my memory before reading a retelling and I thought it might be better as an audiobook than a kindle, but I think I may have been wrong. Without the addition of actions and scenery etc, I found the language hard to follow, even at a much slower speed than I usually listen at. I think maybe kindle would have been a better choice, or maybe the two combined.
I never thought I would rate Shakespeare as just "ok," but there, I've done it. I had seen a movie called The Tempest when I was pretty young (though after trying to find it now, I'm thinking I dreamed it) and it really excited me and I always wanted to see it again. I really like this play. I’ll admit I did struggle with it at first, everything seemed so abrupt and the characterisation felt rushed but in fact I just wasn’t getting it!
I always find visual Shakespeare helps me understand and really appreciate his text, so I managed to watch Julie Taymor’s movie adaptation and suddenly it all made sense.
