There are so many different kinds of stupidity, and cleverness is one of the worst.

I have no idea where to begin with this review. Thomas Mann’s The Magic Mountain may be the most brilliant, mind-numbing classic I have ever read. Pages were devoted to knowing a person’s class and breeding by the length of their cigarette ash. Longer still were the pages devoted to an analysis of opera recordings from the turn of the last century.

This was a tough but illuminating and satisfying read. It took forever to read. I could only read 10-20 pages max at a time before my brain was completely overloaded. The Magic Mountain is a dense, philosophical novel that is meant to be read slowly and carefully so you can soak what the author is saying.
