In Albert Camus’ The Fall, an expatriate Frenchman indulges us through a narration that gives us glimpses of his past, a journey that includes his experiences of being a lawyer as well as philosophical points about his life experiences. There is a sense that he omits quite a bit from his narration, and Camus’ style creates this.

You find yourself in a bar in Amsterdam. A man sits down next to you and begins to tell you about his respectful career as a defense lawyer. He seems like an honorable, stand up dude. You kind of like the guy. Then he slowly let's all the truth come out in increments as the drinks flow. His beliefs, his motives, his dark past. Now he's in an all out rant. It's quite apparent he's a seriously flawed man. All this time you can't even get a word in, you just let him go on his monologue in hopes he ...more

A short book, but not a quick read. There’s a lot of food for thought. It leaves one with an unsettled feeling, as the author doubtless intended.
