I understand there is a lot of controversy about this novel of William Faulkner. It takes place in Mississippi during the 1930's. A family is driving the body of their mother, Addie, in the back of a wagon for 40 miles. What could possibly go wrong with that idea? It is the reaction of each family member and people the family meet on the way which makes this novel a classic. I felt for each person and understood their reactions. Incredible, wished I had read this before The Sound and the Fury. A story not told to the reader, but perceived in pieces from the stream of consciousness from a variety of participants. Turns out to be a type of sampler of irony, humor, psychology and purpose in life. There is a slow moving section in the novel, but things really pick up for me in the last 100 pages or so; where the writer moves into a mode of personal reflection for a few of the characters.
