I enjoyed the way that Keys was able to show Charlie’s growing intelligence via “progress report” entries and how the spelling, grammar, vocabulary, and understanding of abstract concepts improve as his intelligence improves. I also liked the point that intellectual development does not equate to emotional development.

But at the same time, intelligence is a factor of a lot more than your brain’s capacity to process knowledge. I just can’t buy that someone with just a few months to learn EVERYTHI

To be a truly great book 'Flowers for Algernon' needed a ruthless, cold-blooded editor that would've chopped a good fifty pages off. The biggest fault is pacing: after Charlie's IQ rockets past the genius level, the narrative begins to yo-yo. It felt like the same basic scenes happened two or three times, mostly pertaining to the various doctors and professors who continue to treat Charlie like a lab rat. This one pretty much caught my attention right from the jump as it intentionally uses dreadful grammar to encapsulate the inefficiencies in the protagonist's mental ability as he writes in his journal. Then, the reader sees his grammar improve upon having a surgical procedure done to improve his ability to recall new information.
