Brilliant. There is lots to digest here and will write a proper review after I have done so.

A dark, mesmerizing portraiture of the 1930s small town American South. As far as themes go, the novel tackles all the big ones: racism, sexism, bigotry, religion (good vs evil). These themes are explored through several characters who are misfits within the parochial, closed society of Jefferson, Mississippi. From the middle of the novel - really the heart of the story. The day Joe Christmas became a man:
He stepped from the dark porch, into the moonlight, and with his bloody head and his empty stomach hot, savage, and courageous with whiskey, he entered the street which was to run for fifteen years.
