Reading up on Eliot's religious background made that aspect of this book a bit more interesting, but overall, it's just not my type of story. A little too sentimental for my tastes.

Victorian sensibilities, but I liked the story well enough anyways.
I was touched by the message about adoption, and nobleman Godfrey's assumptions about it were well played. "Was it not an appropriate thing for people in a high station to take a charge off the hands of a man in a lower? It seemed an eminently appropriate thing to Godfrey, for reasons that were known only to himself; and by a common fallacy, he imagined the measure would be easy because he had private motives for desiring it." Audible has this book free!
One of my favorite movies was made about this story "A Simple Twist of Fate" with Steve Martin. The movie is updated and is excellent to watch but as normal does not compare with the book. A book which I wish I had read in high school. Should be mandatory reading in school.
