I like that this book lends itself easily to discussions of both its subject matter and its merits. I'm on this nature-reads kick right now and this book contains some of the best examples of gorgeous poetic passages describing nature - my favorite bits are when he's describing the fish under the water in the pond as he floats over them in his boat, or the game where he's in his boat chasing a loon around like a loon. Rare is the book published more than 150 years ago that is as timely as Walden by Henry David Thoroeau. Hipster minimalists, frugal financial independence bloggers, and tiny house dwellers may think they are each sui generis, but their direct intellectual and spiritual grandfather is Thoroeau.
